Getting up in front of an audience to give a speech can be a nerve racking experience. If most of the members of that audience are under the age of 10, it can be downright terrifying. There’s no reason to fear the younger set, you just need to adjust both your speech and how you give it in order to be successful. I’m going to tell you how to do both…

It’s All About What They See

When we talk to an adult audience, we focus first on what we want to say and then if we have time, we’ll think about how we want to say it. When we’re addressing an audience that is made up of kids, this thinking needs to be flipped.

Kids at a young age are primarily visual creatures. If you stand in one place and talk at them, they’ll never pay attention. Talking without doing anything else for more than a couple of minutes will result in your losing your young audience.

Instead, you’re going to need to use visuals as a part of your speech. We’re not talking about just bringing along one thing to hold up at some point during your speech. Rather, you are going to have to have to bring along a whole group of visuals. This also means that while you are rehearsing your speech, you are going to have to plan out what visuals you’ll be using and when you’ll use them.

In This Case, Speed Does Not Kill

As presenters, we try to make sure that we don’t overwhelm our audiences. One way that we do this is to present our information in a measured, moderate pace that we’re sure that they can all keep up with.

However, when you are presenting to a young audience, this is going to be the kiss of death. For kids, slow means boring and boring means that I’m going to be spending my time thinking about other things, not what you are saying.

As speakers, we need to pick up the pace when we are talking to kids. Nothing that we talk about can last for very long. When you are telling a story, you need to quickly get to the point and move on. Kids are not going to sit around waiting for you to build up to your big payoff.

A subtle but very important point is that all of this pick up the pace talk does not mean that you need to talk faster. As adults we talk at about 150 words per minute. However, studies have shown that our young audiences can only process about 124 words per minute. If you speak too quickly, your audience is not going to be able to understand what you are saying and they’ll drift off.

What All Of This Means For You

The good news is that it is possible to give a speech to kids and emerge with your life. However, you can’t give the same type of speech that you would give to an adult audience if you want to be successful.

An audience made up of little kids is fundamentally different from an adult audience. This means that you need to change not only what you say, but also how you say it. Kids tune in and pay more attention if you can make your speech more visual – use props and move around more. They will never permit you to deliver a slow speech – you need to keep things moving quickly.

What wood color or grain you use is a personal choice. Whether you buy matched chairs or use coordinated pieces for contrast is also a personal decision. There are no hard-and-fast rules to what dining room furniture must comprise.

Most formal rooms, however, tend to present darker woods with a high gloss shine. If room allows, many formal dining rooms have not only the table and chairs but also a sideboard or hutch. You can display the family silver or your best china, knickknacks or special serving dishes or dish collections on them.

In contrast, rooms with a more relaxed atmosphere usually present medium or lighter shades of wood with wide grain patterns. Sideboards and hutches also appear quite often in the informal room, but they are also of a lighter shade than the mahoganies and dark pines of their formal counterparts.

Protecting Your Floor

Regardless of the color, design or style of dining room furniture you choose, strongly consider padding the contact surfaces of your furniture to protect your flooring. The weight of the table, benches, chairs or additional furniture can scratch hardwood floors or compress the piling of carpet or dent laminated flooring. You have invested a lot in your dining room. Protect your furniture and flooring investments that combine to present exactly the look you wish to present.

Questions For Employee Review Meetings: Present And Future Ideas

Employee review meetings are a great way for a supervisor and employee to discuss job satisfaction, productivity and improvement over an established time period. They are commonplace in most businesses today and can almost be a 360-degree review that sees a discussion of everything from peers to customers and back to work.

Performance, teamwork, communication and expectations are all the goals that need to be taken from these meetings. The employer will use these to check disciplinary, promotion, salary increase and goals.

Questions about the present situation

Once the past questions are out of the way, you need to check how the employee is fairing in their current position. Questions about the present could include: what are the current requirements of your job, what do you enjoy about the job, where does your job fit in with the needs of the organization, how do you effect the customers we have and how do you feel you work with the rest of your team. These are all great questions, however, one of the most important is:

Questions about the future

Past and present situation questions are very important but arguably more important are questions surrounding the employee’s future and the goals or projects that they have to achieve in the next 12 months or so. Questions that might be asked include: how will you job change in the future, where do you need to improve, are there training programs that you need, is there any additional assistance you need to reach the necessary levels of performance, how can management aid your effectiveness and productivity.

- What are your goals for the next 12 months?
- Have your career objectives changed.

You will have set exact goals for the period between this review and the next so it is important to make sure that the employee knows exactly what’s in front of him, and exactly how to do it. Make sure he or she feels that these set goals are achievable and if these are something he is excited to start. Ensure that they have all the tools they need.

The importance of asking about their career objectives is that you will see where their hopes and dreams lie, and where the company fits into these plans. You will see where you need to improve to ensure their retention or how to get the most out of their skills before they look to move on.

Breakthrough Prostate Cancer Animal Study Presented at International Oncology Conference

One out of every six men in this country is struggling with prostate cancer, and wading through your various treatment options can be confusing. Many factors come into play in your fight against prostate cancer-and being familiar with the latest research is the best way to ensure that you’re making the right decisions for your health. A new pre-clinical study conducted by researchers at the Indiana University Health Methodist Research Institute confirms the dramatic effects of one particular natural formula against aggressive prostate cancer tumors. The study was conducted on laboratory animals using a human xenograft model, which I have outlined below. Lead Investigator Dr. Daniel Sliva presented the latest results of this study to hundreds of researchers and medical doctors in Rhodes, Greece, during the 16th World Congress on Advances in Oncology and 14th International Symposium on Molecular Medicine, where I also presented on the role of Integrative Medicine and Modified Citrus Pectin in cancer treatment.

In his presentation, Dr. Sliva shared the results of this in vivo (live animal) study, demonstrating the significant effects of the formula in suppressing the proliferation and metastasis of human hormone refractory (androgen independent) prostate cancer cells. In addition, the toxicology analysis proved that this formula is non-toxic and poses no risk of side effects. Dr. Sliva says “dietary supplements are used as alternative or adjuvant therapies, but rigorous scientific verification of their biological activity in vitro and in vivo is necessary for the acceptance of dietary supplements in conventional cancer treatment and prevention.”

This study is significant because hormone refractory prostate cancer (androgen independent) is especially hard to treat. It’s the more aggressive, advanced form of prostate cancer that often leads to metastasis and progression of the cancer.

Study Further Validates Previous In-Vitro Results

This formula has previously been studied at research laboratories at Columbia University, NY, NY and at the Cancer Research Laboratory, Methodist Research Institute, Indiana University Health, Indianapolis, IN, using in vitro methods (i.e. cell culture studies) and gene expression analysis. These prior studies showed significant results in this formula’s ability to inhibit cancer growth and proliferation.

This present study is a milestone in the research of this formula, because it used a laboratory animal model to test for toxicity and showed how the formula suppressed human prostate cancer tumor growth within a living mammal.

Presentations – Equipment And Handouts

Equipment

With all the equipment available today it is possible to prepare, check, amend and polish a presentation before you enter the venue. No matter what format and equipment you are going to use, you have the opportunity to put together a comprehensive, detailed and convincing presentation. As we have previously pointed out in the Preparation article, the more you do in advance, the better the project will be. This also applies to choice and use of presentation media. From giving just a simple speaking presentation to the most advanced computer assisted one, checking equipment and facilities is extremely important. Obviously, a spoken presentation will require a simple desk or lectern, possibly a microphone and speakers. A sophisticated presentation will require more advanced technical equipment and backup. If you are using a flip chart or white board always make sure you have sufficient marker pens of various colours and erasers available. When using an overhead projector check it is working and is focused correctly before your meeting begins. Also Check your transparencies are in the correct order, are clear and not damaged and focus them so the information is available to all of the guests. Don’t forget to have a suitable pointer to hand as you will probably need one. If your choice is a full PowerPoint computer assisted presentation or similar, you will have done all the preparation in advance. When you arrive at the venue ensure all the services you require are available and in good working order. You will, of course do all this before the presentation and before the guests arrive. The right equipment is a tremendous help when making a presentation. Technology is now so advanced that choosing the right equipment is a pleasure, not a chore. Having the right equipment improves your chances of making a successful presentation.

Handouts

Most presentations include some sort of handout to give to the guests, possibly a brochure, fact sheet, specification details or maybe a report. Again, this is an important element of your presentation. Always present the information in an attractive folder, rather than using a few sheets of paper stapled together. The cost of small binders or folders is very cheap and will make a much better impression than papers stapled together. If you have printing facilities in your organisation have some folders printed with your logo or other promotional advertising as they will help to advertise your company and also look professional. During your presentation mention the promotional material (handouts) and tell your visitors exactly what they contain. Encourage them to read, examine the information and take it away with them for further study. This method helps to keep your presentation in their minds long after it has been completed. I was once at a presentation in Berlin given by General Motors. They were announcing new models and they handed out three full size A4 ring binders to all the guests, each containing full technical details of the new models. There were about two thousand delegates at that conference so you can imagine the cost of producing, shipping and handling that amount of literature. Obviously General Motors thought it was well worth it. Very few brochures remained in the conference venue after the event. Therefore, you need to give careful consideration to the compilation of your handouts if you are using them. They will become an important part of your promotion.

Mastering The Real Estate Listing Presentation: 5 Steps To Address Concerns

Real estate professionals, often, use the expression, He, who has the listings, controls the market, and, the art, and science, of quality representation, requires, therefore, being, ready, willing, and able, to convince, homeowners, considering selling their houses, to hire him, as their agent! Generally, agents give listing presentations, to these people, and, in most cases, must, effectively, address the concerns, perceptions, needs, and priorities of these homeowners, to their satisfaction, in a thorough, complete, meaningful way. While, some seem to fear, questions, etc, the best agents prepare, and welcome them, because, they realize, when one has questions, and concerns, it, often, means, he’s listening, and hoping to be convinced, you are the best person, to represent him. Regardless of, specifically, what the concern, may be, effectively using the 5 steps, to address these, is the best approach. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, and review, using the mnemonic approach, what this means and represents, and why it matters.

1. Repeat question/ Know clearly what’s being asked: When, someone asks a question, take your time, before you respond! Know, clearly, what the concern, is, and let the individual, finish his thoughts, and then, seek clarification, before responding. Those, who don’t begin here, often, risk, opening – up, a so – called, Pandora’s Box, and putting other concerns, into the homeowner’s mind. Always, begin, by asking, something, such as, In other words, you are concerned about the marketing (or commission, pricing, etc).

2. Empathy: I can perfectly, understand, what you say, may, often, be the words, which, let you differentiate yourself, from the others! Every potential client has some, specific needs, concerns, priorities, and perceptions, so never assume, but rather, show you care, deeply!

3. Answer questions/ address concerns, to client’s satisfaction: Tell the truth, and maintain absolute integrity, in order to earn the other individual’s trust! Never assume, since you know the answer, the other person, automatically, will, also, but, slowly, gradually, effectively, respond to the concern, and answer it, to the satisfaction of the other individual! Wait for some indication, of satisfaction, with your response, whether, it is verbal, and/ or, by some sort of body language!

4. Recreate need/ Call to action: In most cases, after, successfully, using the third step, using a line, such as, In light of what we’ve discussed, transforms the discussion, closer to a close! After, doing so, it makes sense, to recreate the need, and articulate, a clear, call to action. Often, a successful way of saying that, is, Since, for most, their house represents their single, biggest, financial asset, doesn’t it make sense, to hire someone, who will work, with you, and for, you, and make a real difference, for your best interests? Then, wait for an affirmative, acknowledgement, before proceeding, to the final step.

5. Close the deal: Receiving the agreement, in – principle, mentioned, previously, should be considered, a Trial – Close. However, if you want the listing, you must ask for it, simply, clearly, and directly. You might consider, saying, We’ve discussed, many concerns, and, hopefully, I’ve addressed them, to your satisfaction. Wouldn’t it make sense, to get – the – ball – rolling, and completing the basic paperwork? Doesn’t it? Remember, however, to keep your mouth shut, and, wait for the response, because, if this, was a game, the first person to speak, generally, loses!

Real estate agents, only, earn their living, when/ if, they market, and sell, houses, and properties! Using these techniques, generally, makes a huge difference!

Presentation Makes the Difference

We will be placing our industrial building on the market shortly. What should be done to prepare the building for showing to prospective buyers?

“Sell the sizzle, not the steak” is an age-old axiom of marketing that can be applied to the sale or lease of commercial property. While it is true that no one is going to buy a multi-million dollar commercial property because it has a beautiful lawn, there are nevertheless important considerations in the presentation of your property. Presentation is one of the more important aspects of selling property because it creates a picture in the mind of your prospect of how you have maintained the property and how he or she will occupy it.

However, while you should take care to make sure that your property is clean and presentable, you definitely want to avoid undertaking major or costly renovations. There does seem to be a corollary to Murphy’s Law that states that tenant or buyer satisfaction with an improvement or rehabilitation will be inversely proportional to the amount of money spent by the landlord or seller. So you want to take care of any items that may indicate a lack of maintenance or will improve the appearance of the property, but avoid costly renovations such as new office space or even new carpeting.

What are reasonable expenses? Walk through the property from one end to the other. Is the landscape overgrown and littered? Are the refuse receptacles overflowing? Hire a landscaper to clean out the beds, cut the lawn and pick up the litter. Are there potholes in the driveway that need to be repaired? You may even want to consider seal coating and re-striping the parking lot. These are all items that can give a property tremendous curb appeal and should return a multiple of their expense.

Moving indoors, all mechanicals should be in good working order. Doors that drag, plumbing that doesn’t work, HVAC that makes noises or is inoperative indicate a property that has been neglected. Replace any missing or stained ceiling tiles, clean the windows, and make sure everything works. And any roof leaks must be repaired before the first prospect ever sees your building.

As a general rule, we do not recommend repainting or re-carpeting office space. There are exceptions in truly disastrous circumstances but usually buyers and tenants have their own ideas of how the space should be decorated. They may even contemplate carpentry that would make your painting and carpeting a complete waste of money.

It is a good idea to walk through the property with an experienced real estate agent. He or she will not only be a good source of marketing ideas, but will also be an unbiased advisor and may spot areas of concern that you may miss. After the clean-up and maintenance work has been done capture your new curb appeal in the photographs and video that will be use to market the property.

So, in summary, the money spent on maintenance items that will have to be done, one way or another, is a good investment, as are inexpensive ways to make your property more attractive such as cutting the lawns, weeding the garden beds and cleaning the windows. Think twice before engaging in work that a new owner or tenant may want to change. By investing the time and money to create a lasting impression in the eyes of your potential tenant or buyer, you will help ensure that your property is sold or leased quickly.

Can You Hear Me Now is What Presenters Need to Know

When we are given an opportunity to address a group, we spend a great deal of time preparing what we are going to say and how we are going to say it. This is all well and good, but we may be forgetting one critical factor: our audience may not be able to hear us speak.

Why Can’t They Hear Us?
Even if you have the most interesting story to tell your audience, they may not be able to hear you tell it. Rick Moore is a professional freelance writer who speaks in public and he knows a great deal about this because he has a hearing loss and this has caused him to study audiences. He points out that in the U.S. there are 26 million people who have permanent hearing damage. What are the odds that one or more of them will be in your next audience?

Rick notes that as though this wasn’t enough, there are another 12 million people who suffer from tinnitus – a constant ringing in the ears. Put these numbers together and clearly you need to change the way you’ve been speaking in order to accommodate this portion of your audience.

Things To Do So That A Speaker Can Be Heard
There are a number of things that you can start to do as a presenter in order to better meet the needs of the members of your audience who have hearing problems. These include:

  • Room Awareness: We are probably already aware of the lighting and the microphone setup – now we need to become aware of the acoustics. The key here is to pick a spot to stand at that you will be able to be easily heard from everywhere in the room.
  • Speak Up!: This one is pretty obvious, but it’s an important point – in order to be heard by your audience you are going to have to project your voice. Quiet whispering won’t cut it – make sure that you are speaking to be heard in the back of the room.
  • Practice Age Discrimination: No, not the bad kind – the good kind. Take a look at your audience – what does their average age appear to be? The older the audience, the greater the possibility that some members will have hearing problems. This means that you need to be extra vigilant in keeping your volume up and using very clear diction.
  • Show ‘Em Your Lips: Even if your audience members don’t read lips, looking out at them so that they can see your lips moving while you speak, instead of down at your notes, will give them another visual clue that will help them decode what you are saying.

Final Thoughts
These tips are a great way to address the general hearing needs of your next audience. However, as you are giving your next speech you may discover that someone in your audience appears to be becoming bored or disinterested. It could be because despite your best efforts they can’t hear you.

The correct thing to do in this circumstance is to adapt to the situation. Move close to where they are sitting, look directly at them more often, and use more pauses so that they can more easily interpret your words.

Making sure that everyone can hear you helps you to better accomplish your goal in giving the presentation: changing lives for the better.

You Must Be Present To Win

How many times have you heard this at a seminar or trade show? You must be present to win. Has this ever happened to you? You bow out of a seminar earlier because you have an emergency at the office only to find out the next day from your peers that your name was drawn for some great prize and you weren’t there to claim it. How do you feel knowing that you were chosen for this great prize only not to be there to collect?

Unfortunately, this occurrence happens too many of us in our business and personal lives as well, we are simply not “present to win” and wonder the next day, what did I miss? Even worse, you wake up several years later and start questioning why your business or your life has been a struggle.

When I am talking about being present in your business, I am not speaking about being there physically; anyone can sit in a chair and looked engaged. Do this simple exercise, just look around your office and see how many people are buzzing around on cell phones and pieces of paper in their hands.

Many great entrepreneurs run their businesses effectively only stepping in the office every once in a while to make sure that they keep a finger on the pulse. What is the difference, well technically enhancements have definitely allowed this to happen easier, however it was occurring long before the invention of the Smartphone.

Being present is simply being in tune with the needs of the market, your client base, changing trends in the way business is done and simply being present to what is going on around you. IT Professionals need to have an ear to the ground and an eye in the sky at all times to fully be present.

When we are present in our business, we instantly have the competitive advantage over those who are asleep at the switch. This is especially true in the technology industry where change is a daily occurrence. The professional who is in the loop and fully aware will win in the end over those who are not present and resist to change old behaviours. How can this be accomplished easily, here are some basic ways to take the first step to being present to win:

Industry news – tune into what is going on in the industry, subscribe to the newsletters and magazines that the winners subscribe to. If you are not sure what they are, source out someone in the industry that you look up to and ask them. The art of asking can save you an enormous amount of time spinning your wheels.

Blogs – Follow blogs of those who are in the know, my personal blog talks daily on challenges in the IT industry and you can find this on my blog or Arlin Sorensen’s Peer Power blog, from these two blogs you can get to other industry blogs on managed services, technical resources and other more in depth topics.

Books – Find out what the leaders in the industry read, you may be shocked here, many of us read business books and more in depth subjects. We study other successful people who have shown up to win in their business. Successful leaders in our industry are continuous learners.

Industry Events – Cut the cord from the office and get out to industry events. This is a must for anyone wanting to get to the next level in their business. This is where you will find the executives of many vendors and partners; they are present at these events, because they know what it takes to win. At the industry events, the leaders show up looking for new ways to grow their own businesses through more learning and networking.

The next critical component to be being present is taking action. The major thing that separates those who win in the IT industry over the ones that struggle is action and execution. Winners take action almost immediately while those in the struggle category think about reasons why they should not do something, again they wake up several years later wondering what happened to their business.
